Chivayo Burial: Nyaradzo’s vision for a modern memorial park meets one of Zimbabwe’s most closely watched farewells

When family, friends, business associates and members of the public gather at Sahwira Glen Forest Memorial Park today to bid farewell to businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, they will be witnessing more than the closing chapter of the couple’s lives.

They will also be among the first to experience a memorial space at the centre of Nyaradzo Group’s ambitious vision to redefine how Zimbabwe remembers its departed.

Chivayo and Muteke will be laid to rest at Sahwira Glen Forest Memorial Park in Harare today, following the completion of forensic and DNA identification procedures after a helicopter crash that claimed their lives and those of three others in Marondera last week.

This is also the final resting place of Wicknell Chivayo’s mother, Canisia Chivayo who died in January 2021.

The families have confirmed that the burial will be open to the public, allowing friends, colleagues, associates and ordinary Zimbabweans to pay their final respects.

“For Nyaradzo, however, Sahwira Glen Forest Memorial Park represents something considerably larger than a burial ground.

“The site is being transformed into Sahwira Glen Forest Memorial Park (SGFMP), a modern memorial destination built around dignity, remembrance, heritage and the celebration of life,” said Mabel Chidhakwa.

The timing could hardly be more significant.
