THE City of Harare officially ushered in the festive season yesterday with the switching on of Christmas lights in Africa Unity Square at a colourful ceremony attended by hundreds of residents.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume said the lighting of the Christmas lights marked the official start of the festive season in the capital, noting the vibrant atmosphere created by dancers, musicians and the municipal band.
“We are gathered here at Africa Unity Square to celebrate and mark the festive season through the switching on of the Christmas lights,” he said.
“I have seen the mood among us, the dances, the sweet voices, and I know we are in for a joyful celebration.”
Reflecting on the year, the mayor acknowledged the challenges faced by residents, including deaths and unfulfilled aspirations, but emphasised gratitude for life.
“It has been a difficult year.
“We have lost a number of people, and some have not achieved their dreams,” he said.
“But the greatest blessing we receive this Christmas time is the blessing of life.”
Clr Mafume thanked residents for turning out in large numbers despite the short notice and paid tribute to partners who supported the celebrations.
“I want to thank the citizens of Harare who have joined us today. Thank you for dressing for this occasion, even though the notice was short,” he remarked.
“I also want to thank the mayoral team that took us halfway around the city, allowing us to greet the people, talk to them, and spread the Christmas cheer.”
Looking ahead, he urged residents to celebrate responsibly and peacefully during the festive season.
“As the festive season is associated with drinking and merrymaking, let us drink responsibly and avoid violent behaviour,” he advised.
“Be careful so that you do not lose loved ones. We want you back intact in this city.”
Mayor Mafume also extended appreciation to corporate partners and individuals who contributed to the event, singling out Mr Chingwa for decorating the Christmas tree and Coca-Cola, Local Water Private Limited, City Parking Private Limited, and Referral Private Limited for their support.
He also said the city was finalising the Christmas Cheer Fund board, inviting volunteers to join efforts aimed at restoring charity initiatives in Harare.
Residents who attended the event welcomed the initiative, saying it brought a sense of joy and normalcy.
Ms Rudo Mlambo said: “This has lifted our spirits as residents. The year has been hard for many of us, so seeing the city come alive like this reminds us that there is still hope.”
Another resident, Mr Tinashe Dube, added that the lights symbolise unity in the capital city.
“The lights show that despite our challenges, Harare is still one city,” he remarked.
“It is good to see council engaging people directly and celebrating with us.”
