Chiyangwa for Caf executive post

ZIFA and Cosafa president, Phillip Chiyangwa, is set to replace banned Zambian football legend Kalusha Bwalya in the Caf executive committee if recommendations by Cosafa are endorsed.

According to sources from Cosafa, the regional board resolved at its meeting yesterday to recommend the flamboyant Zimbabwean businessman as Bwalya’s replacement. Bwalya was slapped with the sanction last month.

“Yes, it’s true that Cosafa has taken a position that its president, Chiyangwa, replaces Bwalya in the Caf executive committee. The recommendations will now be presented to Caf for approval,” said a source.

Fifa then banned him from from all football-related activities for two years over accepting illegal payments from former Asian football chief Mohammed bin Hammam.

Bwalya was among a host of African football officials caught in the storm of Bin Hammam’s bribery allegations.

Fifa investigations found Bwalya guilty of violating the ethics code by accepting improper payments totaling $80 000 from Bin Hammam in 2009 and 2011 for Faz and personal expenditure.

The former African Footballer of the Year, however, denies the charges.

Cosafa was established by the Supreme Council of Sports in Africa —Zone 6. It brings together 14 nations of Southern Africa under a single umbrella, with the goal of developing the game of football in the region.
