A CHURCH elder from Bulawayo’s Nkulumane 5 suburb has been hauled before the courts following the gruesome murder of his wife, Ms Memory Makathini, whom he allegedly struck twice on the head with an axe before forcing his eldest son to smash windows.
Ackim Bongani Dube (43) appeared on Saturday before Western Commonage magistrate Ms Sikhethile Moyo charged with murder.
Dube, who was not asked to plead, was remanded in custody to 7 August and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
Prosecuting, Mr Tafara Dzimbanhete said the incident occurred on 24 July 2026, at around 1am, when a family squabble erupted between Dube and his wife over an undisclosed issue.
“Dube allegedly struck his wife with an axe twice on the head, leaving the weapon stuck in her skull,” said Mr Dzimbanhete
The court heard that after allegedy killing his wife, Dube turned to his children and assaulted them with a metal rod.
Dube also ordered his 15-year-old son to smash windows and doors, the court heard.
Police were called in and they arrested Dube and the injured children ,who had escaped to a neighbour’s house, were rushed to Mpilo Central hospitalwhere they are admitted.
