PETER Moyo’s handlers believe that consistency is paying off for the Utakataka Express boss’ evolution.
They firmly believe that this evolution also extends beyond his music career to encompass personal growth and family dynamics.
In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Peter’s manager, Kudakwashe Zhuwawo, expressed optimism about the progress being made within the camp.
“I can confidently say we are on the right track and Peter Moyo’s brand has gained significant attention,” he said.
Zhuwawo, who assumed leadership of Utakataka Express in 2020, believes that hard work is also paying off.
“I started managing him five years ago, and I have known him since his early days. Now, we can confidently say he has matured.
“Peter is hardworking and always willing to take on new challenges in his career. He knows what he wants in terms of developing his path.”
Zhuwawo, who oversees Peter’s 16-piece band, noted that despite the challenges of losing some key band members, Peter has weathered many storms.“We have lost some seasoned musicians who previously worked with the late Tongai Moyo, and finding replacements has not been easy,” he said.
“One of the musicians we lost is Spencer Khumulani, along with Baba Gari (Evidence Tarabuku), although we recorded the last album with them.
“In Baba Gari’s place, we have brought in Blessing Katama, formerly with Lucky Kumene, but we are still searching for a replacement for Spencer.
“What’s important now is that we have made do with what we have, and I am glad that fans have embraced the changes we’ve implemented,” he said.
Zhuwawo, who oversees all of Peter’s affairs, noted that Peter’s family, including his siblings, Tanaka and Tongai Junior, have also been supportive.
He has expressed a willingness to welcome them into the fold.
Recently, Obert and Tanaka made a memorable appearance at Peter’s album launch in Harare, joining him on stage.
Following the launch, Peter had a photoshoot with his brothers, a moment that resonated with fans of the late Tongai Moyo and showcased a public display of unity. In the same interview, Zhuwawo emphasised that the trio is getting along well, dispelling any rumours of discord among them.
“Peter Moyo has matured, which is evident in the role he plays not only in his career but also within the family,” Zhuwawo said.
“His younger brothers, Tanaka and Tongai Junior, have been supportive, respecting Peter as the elder brother.
“The siblings have been attending his shows regularly, and we ensure they receive exposure. They are welcome to join him whenever they wish.
“They are now mature, and we expect them to make wise decisions.”
The manager noted that Peter remains grounded despite enjoying rave reviews for his seventh album titled ‘Muchinda Muhombe.’
“I will always rate this album as one of Peter Moyo’s best ever compositions,” he said. “The feedback we are getting online is overwhelming, and it’s nice when people are singing along to some of these compositions.
“We have been yearning for this, and I am happy to be part of this exciting journey with Peter Moyo. “Most of the songs from his latest album have gained a lot of traction, which is, in itself, a plus for us.”
He added:“As a way of promoting this album, we have lined up a series of regional shows, with those in South Africa and Botswana already confirmed. We are starting the regional shows in October, which is quite impressive,” he said. He also revealed the camp’s plans to hold the Dhewa commemorations in Kwekwe next month.
“We always celebrate Tongai Moyo’s legacy, and this time around, our wish is to honour him the best way we can with a show in Kwekwe.
“Kwekwe remains our home, and the impact that Dhewa made will always be strongly felt and appreciated by his old and new fans. Of course, he was a national figure and legend, but the difference he made is commemorated in his hometown.”
After taking over the reins 11 years ago following the death of his father Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo on October 15, 2011, Peter’s journey has been one of self-discovery, sacrifice and hard work, according to his management team.
