THE Government has said construction of the Mabvuku Interchange is progressing well, with the works having surpassed the halfway mark and the contractors are confident that the project will be completed by the end of the year.
The project, situated along the busy Harare–Mutare Highway, is designed to ease congestion and improve safety on one of Zimbabwe’s key road corridors.
Works on the project began in September 2025, with progress now standing at 54 percent.
In an interview with ZBC News this week, the Deputy Director of Construction in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Engineer Virginia Mawere, said significant milestones have been achieved, including the completion of beams that are ready for installation.
“We started in September 2025, and to date we are at 54 percent progress. As you can see behind us, all the beams are now completed and are ready to be lifted onto the structure. By year-end, this structure will be complete,” she said.
“The location and structure we chose meant we did not have to deal with compensation issues. We have had a few delays in transporting some of the materials, but we are dealing with those challenges.
“We are confident that this will have a huge impact. Where people would spend three to four hours at Trabablas, and they now spend about three minutes, we are confident it will be the same here. We have eliminated conflict points in terms of vehicles turning. Right-turning traffic will no longer interfere with vehicles travelling straight.”
The project is among several infrastructure developments being implemented across the country, with local engineers and workers playing a key role.
Engineer Mawere said being involved in such projects is a source of pride, particularly at a time when infrastructure development is driving economic growth.
“It has been an honour. It has been interesting. We are at a time when there are a lot of infrastructure projects, and it is a great honour to be part of this. It is an exciting time for us as women engineers. We are happy with our leadership because they have enabled us to be part of such projects,” she said.
President Mnangagwa has said Government will continue implementing infrastructure projects aimed at modernising the country.
“More work lies ahead; the party will not rest or relax. Under the Second Republic, the ZANU PF machinery is moving full speed ahead to guarantee that our people are more prosperous and our nation is modernised and developed. Brick by brick, stone upon stone, we will never tire in the ongoing work to build our country,” he said.
The Mabvuku Interchange follows closely on the heels of President Mnangagwa’s commissioning of the Trabablas Traffic Interchange, which seamlessly links Simon Mazorodze, High Glen, and Chitungwiza Roads.
