THE Harare Civil Court has ordered a Harare man to pay US$60 per month in maintenance for his seven-month-old.
This was after Patience Chipendo took Itai Sevanhu to court, seeking US$300 to fend for their baby.
Chipendo told the court that Sevanhu was failing to provide for their child. She then submitted a schedule of the child’s needs totalling US$300 every month.
“The child still needs nappies, food, medical care and clothes that I cannot provide alone,” she said.
Chipendo said she is no longer working due to an operation done on her and is being assisted by her church.
“I am no longer working, and I am getting assistance from the Church of Christ,” she said.
She told the court that Sevanhu is a truck driver and a mechanic who earns US$700 per month.
Sevanhu, however, offered US$50 per month for the child, arguing that he is only a driver at a Shamva mine and is earning US$400 per month.
He also told the court that he is looking after four other minor children. After hearing submissions from both parties, presiding magistrate Ms Makonye Janemary granted the maintenance application, ordering Mr Sevanhu to pay US$60 monthly or ZiG equivalent with effect from September 30, 2026 until the child has turns 18.
