COVID-19: Another Kwekwe lecturer succumbs to Covid at Kwekwe Poly

Another lecturer at Kwekwe Polytechnic has succumbed to Covid-19 bringing to two the number of staff members to die following a Covid-19 outbreak at the institution last week.

Kwekwe District Covid 19 taskforce chairperson Mr Fortune Mupungu confirmed the incident and said the lecturer died in Masvingo where he had gone for HEXCO examinations marking.

He said the now deceased lecturer, Mr Edward Takaedza, initially tested negative but later tested positive to the virus after falling sick in Masvingo.

“He then died yesterday while in hospital admission and now we have lost two lecturers at Kwekwe Poly since the outbreak,” he said

The college has since suspended face-to-face lectures after 45 students and three lectures tested positive for the virus.

Mr Mpungu said another lecturer tested positive to Covid-19 yesterday.

Midlands State University was also forced to suspend face-to-face lessons amid indications that several students at its Zvishavane and Gweru main campus tested positive for the virus.

Gweru and Kwekwe have now been declared Covid-19 hotspots following a spike in cases in the two cities.
