A HARARE-BASED police officer was arrested after allegedly selling more than 30 sets of police uniforms.
Authorities say the sale of police uniforms is strictly outlawed since they are state-issued property.
, a move Muteswa Shamain Dzingai, investigators say, displayed a blatant abuse of office.

Dzingai appeared before regional magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa facing charges of criminal abuse of office.
He was released on US$200 bail and will return to court on 25 November as investigations continue.

According to prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi, Dzingai’s troubles started in early September when fellow cop Justice Chasiya from the Police Band approached him for help in acquiring police uniforms.

Chasiya allegedly ordered 40 riot trousers, 50 Special Tactics Unit (STU) caps and 20 grey shirts — and Dzingai reportedly delivered the goods before pocketing US$1 000.
The court heard that Chasiya later sold the uniforms to other officers.

The deal came unstuck on 23 October when Chasiya was arrested for the illegal sale of police uniforms. During questioning, he threw Dzingai under the bus, implicating him as the supplier.

“The conduct is inconsistent with his duties as a law enforcement officer,” argued the prosecution.
