HIGHLANDERS coach Pieter de Jongh has poured cold water on claims that he disrespected match officials and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after his explosive comments following Bosso’s Chibuku Super Cup semi-final defeat to Dynamos on Sunday.
The Dutchman caused a storm when he appeared to accuse referees and the league of bias, fuming that his side had played
against “12 men” after a string of questionable calls during the high-voltage clash.
“It’s always difficult to play against 12 players. The first goal was a big shame. There is no fair play,” he blasted soon after the final whistle, also questioning the PSL’s fixture schedule.
“How is it possible that Dynamos must play on Saturday and next week play on Saturday and next week play on Sunday?” he asked reporters, telling them to “write stories about that.”
His remarks sparked fierce debate, with some accusing him of disrespecting local football authorities while others hailed him for standing up for fairness.
In a social media post, De Jongh has said his words were misunderstood.
“Football must always be about fair play and respect that’s what defines the beautiful game. My post-match comments after the Chibuku Super Cup semi-final were never meant to disrespect the PSL, referees or Dynamos,” he wrote.
He said his frustrations came from passion for the game and a desire to see justice on the field.
“I spoke out of passion for the game and fairness values I will always stand for. I fully respect the league and match officials and remain focused on helping Highlanders finish the season strong.”
With tempers cooling, Bosso fans will now be hoping their coach channels that same fire into their league campaign.
