THE International Day of Forests and World Meteorological Day will be celebrated on the same day this year.

Minister of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, Evelyn Ndlovu, announced that the joint event will take place on March 20 at Mlomwe Primary School in Bulilima District, Matabeleland South Province.

“It is my honour to announce this unique celebration of two globally significant United Nations observances,” said Min Ndlovu.

“The International Day of Forests is observed on March 21st, while World Meteorological Day falls on March 23rd. Together, these days remind us of the delicate balance of life itself.”

She added:“Forests are the green lungs of our planet, regulating our climate and supporting vast biodiversity. “In contrast, meteorology enables us to understand atmospheric phenomena, predict natural forces, and protect communities from climate extremes.

“Collectively, they underscore our vital responsibility to protect our Earth – not merely as an option but as an essential commitment to our survival and prosperity.”

‘‘They provide shelter to over 1.6 billion people. They are home to more than 80 percent of terrestrial species and play a critical role in climate regulation, water security, soil protection, and disaster risk reduction.”

She added, “The International Day of Forests supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 15, which calls for sustainable forest management and biodiversity protection, and SDG 13, which necessitates urgent action to combat climate change.”
