TWO men have been arrested for allegedly stealing forty number plates and fitting them onto other vehicles.

Tawanda Alfred, 38, and Alexander Muchandibaya, 33, are both residents of Chinhoyi.

Three other suspects are still at large.

They allegedly stole number plates from parked vehicles either at residential places or at car parks in and around Chinhoyi.

Forty reports of missing number plates were filed at ZRP Chemagamba.

Police reacted swiftly and alerted ZINARA and the stolen number plates were flagged.

Vehicles fitted with the stolen plates were intercepted at different toll gates and investigations led to the arrest of the suspects.

Mashonaland West Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, told H-Metro, the police observed that some of the vehicles had their chassis numbers and registration books tampered with and altered to match with the stolen number plates.

“So far, the suspects have admitted to have stolen 21 registration plates,” said Insp Kohwera.
