Eight months jail for assaulting village head

A Victoria Falls man has been sentenced to eight months imprisonment for assaulting his village head.
Reconcile Amos Nyathi was convicted on his own plea by Victoria Falls magistrate Ms Linda Dzvene.

Prosecutor, Mrs Portia Moyo, told the court that on the December 13, 2025, at Ndlovu Business Centre under Chief Mvuthu, Nyathi assaulted the complainant, Mr Edison Moyo.

He kicked the 63-year-old village head on the right side ribs and also struck him with a log on the left cheek.
“The complainant in this case is Edison Moyo, a male adult aged 63 residing at his own homestead in BH 24 village, Chief Mvuthu, and is not employed.

“The accused person is a male adult residing at Ishmael Nyathi’s homestead in the same village and is also not employed,” said Mrs Moyo.

She said on December 13, 2025, at around 7PM, the complainant was drinking beer at Ndlovu Business Centre and Nyathi approached him and took his beer. The complainant told him to return his beer and this did not go down well with the accused person.

Mrs Moyo said Nyathi went on to hit the complainant once on the right side ribs and also struck him with a log on the left cheek.”

The assault was reported to the police leading to Nyathi’s arrest.

In mitigation, Nyathi pleaded for leniency, citing family responsibilities and said he committed the offence while intoxicated.

Ms Dzvene however, cited the gravity of the offence, particularly failure to respect traditional leaders.

She said the court considered the unprovoked attack and the use of a log.

He was sentenced to an effective eight-month imprisonment.
