Elderly motorist crashes into shop at Northend Shopping Centre

AN elderly motorist escaped unhurt after his vehicle rammed into a shop at Northend Shopping Centre on Friday afternoon, leaving the shop owner counting losses.

The incident occurred around 4pm when the man, who was wearing a white T-shirt, allegedly drove out of the parking bay and slammed into the shopfront.

Eyewitnesses said the driver told people at the scene that he had mistakenly engaged forward gear, instead of reverse gear, leading to the accident.

“No one was injured, but the shop was badly damaged,” said a witness. “The owner was left counting losses as the car smashed into the premises.”

In a bizarre turn of events, the motorist allegedly attempted to reverse the vehicle after the crash, apparently trying to flee the scene, but was stopped by members of the public who blocked his way.
