The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has called on households and communities across Zimbabwe to actively participate in the National Clean-Up Day as part of efforts to promote zero waste and environmental sustainability.
In a circular, EMA said today’s clean-up activities come as the nation gears up its preparations for the International Day of Zero Waste, which will be commemorated globally on March 30.
This year’s clean-up activities are being held under the theme “From Household to Community: Driving Zero Waste Together.”
“This theme recognises that the journey towards zero waste begins at the household level but achieves meaningful impact when communities work collectively through waste separation, recycling, composting and responsible consumption,” said EMA.
The environmental agency said households are among the largest generators of food waste, making their participation critical in reducing waste and supporting sustainable environmental practices.
The 2026 International Day of Zero Waste will focus on the environmental and social impacts of food loss and waste while encouraging sustainable consumption and circular solutions.
“We encourage the food and hospitality sector to actively participate in efforts to reduce food waste and strengthen waste reduction initiatives,” said EMA, while also challenging local authorities to coordinate clean-up activities within their jurisdictions to ensure wider participation.
EMA noted that collective action is essential in safeguarding the environment and ensuring citizens enjoy their constitutional right to a clean and healthy environment.
