PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has called for a national discourse on climate change to ensure adoption of agro-ecological tailoring and promotion of smart agriculture in all communities in order to boost agricultural productivity and contain possible effects of bad weather.
Addressing the 394th Ordinary Session of the Zanu-PF Politburo at the party’s headquarters in Harare yesterday, President Mnangagwa said adoption of such measures will help build resilience and mitigate vulnerabilities of communities should there be subdued rainfall in any season.
“It is pleasing that our country’s economy remains on a positive growth trajectory. Permutations reflect that the nation is yet again poised for another landmark wheat harvest. The need to bolster agriculture production and productivity, particularly ahead of the predicted 2026-2027 El Niño disruptive weather, cannot be ignored,” he said.
President Mnangagwa said the Party and leadership across all levels must engage in conversations around climate change so as to ensure that agro-ecological tailoring and the promotion of climate-smart agriculture is adopted across communities.
Doing so, he said, will help build adaptation capacities and resilience while reducing the vulnerabilities of communities.
President Mnangagwa said there was nothing wrong in leaders alerting their followers that there was a potential for subdued rainfall owing to the effects of El Niño.
“You cannot be said to be an alarmist by telling your people that there is a possibility that there might be low rainfall. It is actually good in that they will preserve their crops in the granary for future use,” he said.
President Mnangagwa called for collective efforts in pursuing the national development agenda.
“Comrades, economic sovereignty remains critical for the “Zimbabwe we all want”. Collective effort, hard, honest work, focus and commitment to the national development agenda, as espoused in our National Development Strategy 2, is our duty as a nation”.
The President urged the party leadership to continue facilitating citizen participation in economic development.
“I urge the Party and all Politburo Secretaries to continue promoting and facilitating citizen participation in economic development, including through diverse investments, for shared prosperity,” he said.
President Mnangagwa said it is in this spirit that Zimbabwe has launched the Victoria Falls International Financial Centre.
“This landmark development positions Zimbabwe as a competitive global financial service centre and investment destination, while deepening financial markets to support long-term growth.
“Our people must be active participants in these developments. Vanhu vedu ngavakurudzirwe kuchengetedza zvavanowana kumabasa akasiyana siyana,” he said. President Mnangagwa commended countries that supported Zimbabwe in electing Harare as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in New York last month.
“On the international relations front, I express gratitude to all countries who supported Zimbabwe and our subsequent election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the period 2027-2028.
The endorsement reflects our nation’s capacity to contribute towards global peace, security and shared development that is anchored on the rules-based system, state sovereignty and multilateralism,” he said.
President Mnangagwa noted that preparations for the hosting and subsequent assumption by Zimbabwe of the Comesa Chairmanship were going on well.
“Preparations for the hosting of the 2026 Comesa Summit and assumption of the Chairmanship of the regional bloc are progressing well. The platform provides invaluable opportunities to advance our socio-economic development agenda while contributing to regional integration and sustainable development,” he said.
President Mnangagwa said the recent State visit to Zimbabwe by Equatorial Guinea President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, consolidated the longstanding relations between the two sister nations.
“Such bilateral interactions reinforce the enduring solidarity that subsists on the Continent and beyond. We will continue to ensure that these strong political and diplomatic ties translate into tangible socio-economic benefits for our peoples,” he said.
