THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has launched a manhunt for fugitive convict, Mike Mathe, who escaped from Plumtree Prison under circumstances that remain under investigation.
Mathe’s escape, which is suspected to be an inside job, has prompted heightened security measures and an appeal to the public for assistance.
According to reports, Mathe daringly escaped from Plumtree Prison after allegedly cutting through burglar bars with a hacksaw blade in the early hours of Saturday morning.
ZPCS spokesperson Chief Superintendent Meya Khanyezi said security teams were immediately deployed to track his movements.
The escape has sparked concerns among local residents, particularly those living near transit routes commonly used by individuals fleeing the border town.
“The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service wishes to inform the public that an inmate unlawfully escaped from Plumtree Prison. We want to assure the nation that investigations into this incident are currently underway, and we are working diligently to apprehend the escaped inmate and prevent any further occurrences,” said Asst Comm Khanyezi.
“As an institution dedicated to the incarceration and rehabilitation of offenders, we remain committed to our mandate of ensuring the safety and security of society. We uphold the highest standards of professionalism and are continuously reviewing our procedures to strengthen our operations and maintain public confidence,” she said.
She urged community members to remain vigilant and report any information that could lead to Mathe’s apprehension.
“We call on the community to remain vigilant and report any information that may assist in the swift recapture of the inmate. The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety of all citizens,” said Asst Comm Khanyezi.
She called on residents not to approach the fugitive if sighted, but instead report any relevant information to law enforcement authorities.
