From now on we will be staying open until 7PM, Monday to Friday, giving you more time to enjoy those well-deserved treats. This shift to later hours is more than just a scheduling update — it’s part of a much larger story, one that traces the evolution of shopping habits from early closures to the round-the-clock convenience we enjoy today.
It’s fascinating to reflect on how things used to be. For much of the 20th Century in the first world, a shop closing at 5PM was considered generous. Strict regulations governed opening hours, with many shops shutting their doors by 6PM.
These rules were designed to protect workers from excessively long days, and legislation such as the UK’s Shops Act of 1911 introduced a weekly half-holiday to promote a healthier work-life balance. Back then, life followed a simpler rhythm: work ended, and people went home.
Shopping was a daytime affair, often squeezed into a half-day off, with everyone rushing to finish their errands before closing time.
Today, the landscape has changed dramatically. The way we live and work has evolved, and so too have our expectations. Many people now work irregular hours or face long commutes, making it difficult to visit the high street before traditional closing times. Extending our hours to 7PM offers the flexibility to stop by after a busy day, whether it’s for a comforting coffee or a last-minute gift.
