A 70-YEAR-OLD Chimanimani man who preyed on a 10-year-old girl has been slammed with a 20 year jail term after the Mutare Magistrates Court found him guilty of repeated sexual abuse.
The sex attacks stretched over two years when the girl, now 10 years old, was between 6 and 8 years old.
The the elderly predator would bait the minor with small amounts of money up to ZiG20, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).
“The Mutare Magistrates Court has sentenced a 70 year old man to 20 years imprisonment for sexually abusing a 10 year old girl,” the NPAZ said.
The abuse stretched from 2021 to 2023 while the girl was living with her grandparents. The old man would reportedly lure the child with small amounts of money.
“He initially lured her with ZiG20 and instructed her not to disclose the abuse,” the NPAZ said.
His dark secret crumbled this year after fate intervened. In July 2025, the girl moved to another village to stay with her mother and attended a police led crime awareness campaign at her school. The brave child finally opened up.
“Following the campaign, she confided in her mother, who immediately reported the matter to the police,” the prosecuting authority said.
The NPAZ hammered home a strong warning, urging communities to tighten their guard and protect the vulnerable.
“Communities must remain vigilant in protecting children. Report any suspicious activities immediately. Justice will be served for crimes against the vulnerable.”
