Family dispute over missing US$10 leads to fatal assault

A MAN from Dzivaresekwa 2 appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court on Saturday for allegedly killing his relative following a misunderstanding over a missing US$10.

Obert Chanetsa (23) was charged with murder by magistrate Ms Appollonia Marutya, who remanded him in custody to September 27 pending his indictment for trial at the High Court.

According to the State, on August 24, 2025, at around 7am, Chanetsa allegedly assaulted the now-deceased Nicolas Chanetsa at number 1738/23 Mashambanzou Street, Dzivaresekwa 2.

The two reportedly had a heated argument after Obert accused Nicolas of stealing his money.

The altercation escalated, and Obert allegedly struck Nicolas several times on the head with an unknown blunt object. 

The deceased sustained serious head injuries and bled profusely from the nose and occiput (the back of the head).

He was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

After the incident, Obert fled the scene and went into hiding in Dotito, where he was eventually apprehended by police on September 11, 2025.
