FARMERS have been urged to embrace climate-smart agricultural practices and grow resilient crop varieties to protect their harvests and household food security amid forecasts of a potentially severe El Niño weather phenomenon.
Umguza Ward 10 councillor Johannes Sibanda made the call during the Matabeleland North provincial launch of the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme, which was attended by Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Richard Moyo.
Cllr Sibanda said the conservation agriculture-based programme was critical in helping farmers sustain production and withstand the threat of poor rainfall.
“This is precisely why Pfumvudza/Intwasa is not just relevant — it is indispensable. Its principles of conservation agriculture, minimum soil disturbance, mulching, precise input application and water harvesting are designed to build resilience even when rains fail,” he said.
Speaking at the launch, held at the homestead of headman and host farmer Mr Nqobile Ncube, Cllr Sibanda urged every household to fully embrace the programme.
He said household food security was the foundation for building food-secure districts, provinces and, ultimately, the nation, despite the anticipated effects of El Niño.
“We are in the first year of implementation of the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) (2026-2030), launched by President Mnangagwa. NDS2 calls for climate-proofing our agriculture. By implementing Pfumvudza/Intwasa correctly, we are directly responding to that call,” said Cllr Sibanda.
He urged villagers to follow agricultural guidance, participate fully in the programme and work collectively to strengthen the province’s resilience to climate-related shocks.
Cllr Sibanda called on communities to return to their respective wards, villages and institutions with renewed commitment to Pfumvudza/Intwasa, guided by the principle of leaving no one and no place behind.
“As we return to our respective wards, villages and institutions, let us rally behind Intwasa with renewed energy and unity, to ensure that no household succumbs to hunger due to El Niño,” he said.
