FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD Chiedza Mushunje from Macheke, who became a heroine after courageously assisting in the delivery of her neighbour’s baby as elderly women, including her own mother, fled, has met the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, much to her delight and the fulfilment of her wish.
Chiedza and her mother, Ms Tecla Mushumbi, were warmly welcomed by Dr Mnangagwa at her offices in Harare, where the First Lady commended Chiedza for her gallantry.
Meeting Dr Mnangagwa, whom she credited for her strength during the delivery, saying she drew energy from her radio and television programmes encouraging girls to be strong, responsible and ready to help others in times of need, Chiedza said it was a dream come true.
In her usual act of generosity and appreciation of bravery, while honouring her wish, Mother Zimbabwe spent time with Chiedza and shared a heartfelt moment with her.
Chiedza, who is awaiting her Grade 7 results, is set to benefit from tuition fees if she passes, enabling her to pursue her preferred career in nursing.
“I decided to meet you, Chiedza, since you mentioned my name and expressed a desire to see me. I want to thank you for the courage you demonstrated, courage that even some of the elders, including your own mother, could not gather.
“As you await your Grade 7 results, we remain hopeful that you will pass with flying colours. Should you perform well, I will support your academic journey so that you can pursue your preferred career in nursing,” she said.
Mother Zimbabwe, while interacting with Chiedza, also asked her how she felt when she delivered the baby. Chiedza responded, “Moyo wangu wakafara,” (My heart was filled with joy.)
Chiedza was on cloud nine at the gesture.
“My long-held wish to meet the First Lady has finally come true. I used to only see her on television or hear her speaking on the radio.
“I am truly happy to have met her in person. I am also grateful for the gifts I received, including groceries and clothes,” she said.
Chiedza said, “I am also especially delighted that the First Lady promised to support my academic journey if I pass my Grade 7 exams. My dream is to pursue a career in nursing.”
Her mother said she was happy, enjoying the fruits of her womb, expressing gratitude for having met the First Lady and for seeing her speak to her daughter.
“What began as a frightening experience has turned into a blessing. We came here uncertain of what would happen, and now we have had the privilege of meeting the First Lady in person.
“In some cases, children may get you into trouble as a parent because of their actions, but for me, Chiedza has brought something truly good,” she said.
Chiedza just completed her Grade Seven examinations at Tashinga Primary School in Macheke.
While the elders fled in fear at Mhiripiri Shopping Centre under Chief Makoni in Macheke, Chiedza remained calm and determined.
Drawing on what she had learned from family health education sessions and community discussions, she bravely assisted in delivering the baby.
With nothing but courage and compassion to guide her, she relied on her limited knowledge, and soon the sound of a newborn’s cry filled the air, touching the hearts of everyone nearby.
Only after hearing that cry did the community members return, astonished and deeply moved by the young girl’s bravery.
