IN a remarkable display of progress and consistency, three comedians—Sikhanyiso “Ckanyiso” Mlambo, Dillan “DC” Chiota and Lebohang Kurwaisimba— have captured the hearts of fans and management at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Harare, which has become their second home.
Formerly known as Meikles Hotel, this five-star establishment has embraced comedy as part of its entertainment offerings, catering for both residents and diners.
Renowned for its elegance and reputation, the hospitality facility is professionally managed, ensuring that guests receive the quality experience they expect.
The major talking point in comedy circles has been the enthusiastic endorsement of this new generation of comedic talent, who have quite literally taken over the venue.
On May 17, the big night for comedy lovers in Harare and its environs will unfold, promising an evening filled with laughter just ahead of the Africa Day celebrations on May 25.
This event is not just about entertainment but represents a cultural moment where the art of comedy flourishes in a vibrant atmosphere.
One of the event organisers, Dillan Chiota – better known by his moniker DC – expressed his excitement as he returns to his favourite performance space alongside his peers.
DC last performed there on April 19, drawing an appreciative crowd of mature comedy lovers.
This upcoming event is a testament to the growing appreciation for local talent, and it highlights the importance of creating spaces where comedians can thrive and connect with their audience.
In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, DC assured fans of a memorable night, building on the attendance from the April show.
“To be honest, May 17th is going to be an unforgettable night of laughter, entertainment, and possibly some surprises,” he said.
“The first show (on April 19) was a success, and huge credit goes to everyone who had a hand in that. We are looking to do something bigger and better, with new material and a unique energy,” he stressed.
Reflecting on how he met his two peers, Lebohang and Ckanyiso, DC described it as magical.
“Forming a clique with Lebohang and Ckanyiso is a story of shared passion, mutual respect, and creating good times.
“We have worked together before on projects, supported each other, and had a blast doing it.”
He also expressed confidence in the success and growth of comedy in Zimbabwe, which continues to win the hearts of many.
“Comedy in Zimbabwe has a growing appeal, with a vibrant scene and talented comedians. Every day, there is an audience hungry for laughter, and the industry is ripe for innovation,” stated DC.
The 22-year-old shared how he managed to convince the management at Hyatt Regency Hotel to consider comedy for their entertainment schedule.
“Convincing management to host the sessions was likely a process of outlining our mutual benefits, and I’m happy about our current relationship,” he said.
He acknowledged that the future of comedy in Zimbabwe is secure, as the new school has been doing wonders to leave a lasting impression.
“The future of comedy in Zimbabwe looks bright, with opportunities for growth, collaboration, and recognition,” he said.
In terms of sponsorship, he conceded that they still have a long way to go in convincing potential partners.
“There are a couple of strategies that can help boost the sector, like collaboration with influencers and other artists, creating branded content, and possibly partnering with local businesses to support local comedy events,” he said.
