POLICE have arrested a foreign national after recovering a significant quantity of dangerous drugs during an operation in Chivhu, in a case that has raised fresh concern over cross-border drug trafficking.

Obede Ndayambaje (33) whose nationality was not revealed was arrested last week in connection with cases of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs and entering the country by evasion.

In a statement, police said the suspect was apprehended on March 7 2026 at a food court in Chivhu following a security operation.

“Police arrested Obede Ndayambaje (33), a foreign national, in connection with unlawful possession of dangerous drugs and entry by evasion. The suspect was apprehended at a food court in Chivhu,”said the police in a brief statement.

Upon his arrest, detectives recovered 31 kilogrammes of dagga which was allegedly in the suspect’s possession. Police also recovered various foodstuffs which investigators suspect had been laced with cocaine, a development that has triggered further investigations.

Authorities believe the drugs were intended for distribution within the country, although investigations are still underway to establish the source of the drugs, possible accomplices and the intended market.

Police are also investigating how the suspect managed to enter the country illegally.

The arrest forms part of ongoing operations by law enforcement agencies targeting drug trafficking syndicates operating within and across Zimbabwe’s borders.

The ZRP has meanwhile warned members of the public against involvement in drug trafficking and illegal entry into the country, saying the law will take its course against offenders.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon facing charges related to unlawful possession and trafficking of dangerous drugs as well as contravening immigration laws.
