Former Botswana President Festus Mogae dies at 86

Former Botswana President Festus Gontebanye Mogae has died at the age of 86. He had recently been hospitalised and was reported to have been recovering at home following treatment.

He led the country from 1998 to 2008 as Botswana’s third Head of State.

The former President is widely respected for steering Botswana through a period of economic growth and strengthening its public health response to HIV/AIDS.

Last month, the Office of the President in Botswana issued a statement saying the former President was unwell and receiving medical care at a hospital in Gaborone.

He was a respected Statesman and served as SADC Chair from 2005 to 2006.
