IT will be no laughing matter when the Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAAs) take centre stage next month, with four of the city’s top comic talents vying for the Outstanding Comedian award.
Among the nominees is celebrated stand-up act Frank Chirisa, who has earned his second nod in the category. He is up against D’juni, Mbongeni Ignatius, and General Lesley.
“It feels great to be honoured by the city I proudly represent on an international stage. The BAA is something I haven’t won before, and it feels good just to be in those conversations,” said Chirisa.
He acknowledged that this year’s category is particularly competitive, making the stakes higher than ever.
“Winning it this year would mean a lot because, for the first time in a while, the Outstanding Comedian category is really, really tight,” he said.

The comedian went on to commend his fellow nominees, praising their consistency and impact on the local comedy landscape. “You look at everyone who’s in the category, it’s people who have done great work for themselves, for the city and the industry. D’juni has been curating two shows a month since last year, creating platforms for many comedians. Mbongeni Ignatius performed at Shoko Festival and Intwasa, two nights in a row. General Lesley filled Bulawayo Theatre twice,” he noted.
“The award can go to anyone, and I wouldn’t be mad because those guys are my brothers. We share the same love for the craft and represent Bulawayo with pride.”

This year’s nomination comes after Chirisa missed out on the award in 2022, when South Africa-based comic Chik Aljoy edged him out in a strong field that included MaForty and Q Dube.
As awards anticipation builds, Chirisa is already focused on closing the year with his signature comedy marathon – 12 Days of Franxmas. The festive showcase will run from December 13 to 24, offering 12 back-to-back nights of laughter.
The 2025 BAAs will be held on December 20, where the city’s creative excellence will be celebrated across music, theatre, dance, literature, film, design and more. — @MbuleloMpofu
