Gems leave for Scotland

THE Zimbabwe senior women’s netball team is set to take part in the inaugural Celtic Cup to be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland next week.

The Gems, led by Captain Felistus Kwanga, and are scheduled to leave the country today, will compete against Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland in the tournament scheduled to run from November 7 to 10 at the Emirates Arena.

The contest is designed for both seasoned fans and novices, providing the opportunity to see international netball at its best. The tournament will follow a round-robin format with the final being held on Sunday, November 10.

The GEMS

The tournament was created by the three European countries to provide the best competitive tournament for athletes and spectators outside the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games.
The Gems team, which was unveiled at a local hotel consists of four team officials.

Four players will be having their first appearance in the senior national team, these are Blessing Kahari, Luya Anifa, Thandiwe Daisy Mashore and Faith Mutero.

Gems’ manager, Agnes Chiroodza said that the team has been in camp preparing for the tournament and players are in good form to compete.

“Yes, it’s true, the Gems are in camp preparing to go to Scotland for the Celtic Cup, they are ready to compete, this tournament comprises of ranking games except one and this is done to prepare for the World Cup in 2027,” said Chiroodza.
The test series is a crucial opportunity to merge experienced players with future talent, compete with the best and learn how to win.

Viewing the Celtic Cup as a significant learning experience, the Gems are focused on honing their skills to win on the international stage.
