For more than three decades, millions of South Africans have known exactly what 8 pm on SABC 1 meant.
For many households, it was time for “Generations: The Legacy”. That long-standing television tradition is about to change.
From Monday, July 27, “Generations: The Legacy” will move to 8:30 pm, making way for “Uzalo”, which will now air at 8 pm as part of a major primetime schedule shake-up by the public broadcaster.
It marks the first time in more than three decades that the “Generations” brand has moved from its familiar 8 pm weekday slot.
For generations of viewers, 8 pm and “Generations” became almost synonymous, making this one of the biggest scheduling changes in the show’s history.
Why is “Generations: The Legacy” moving to 8:30 pm? The announcement has sparked plenty of conversation among loyal viewers, but SABC 1 says the change should not be seen as a downgrade for one of the country’s best-known television dramas.
Instead, the broadcaster describes it as a strategic adjustment that keeps both of its biggest soapies firmly in prime time.
SABC 1 Channel Head Ofentse Thinane said “Uzalo” and “Generations: The Legacy” remain central to the channel’s evening line-up.
“Uzalo and Generations built these evenings together, and both remain exactly where they belong, at the heart of SABC 1 prime time. From 27 July, they simply trade places. Viewers will continue to enjoy both programmes back-to-back. Generations: The Legacy is not stepping out of prime time. It is closing it.”
For viewers, the biggest adjustment will simply be changing a routine that has existed for decades. The two soapies will still air back-to-back, only in reverse order.
New SABC 1 weeknight schedule
From Monday, July 27, SABC 1’s weekday evening line-up will be:
7:30 pm: “Skeem Saam”
8 pm: “Uzalo”
8:30 pm: “Generations: The Legacy”
SABC has also confirmed that additional programming changes will be announced on the same day.
Why SABC is changing its primetime line-up
While SABC has not given a detailed reason for the scheduling change, its timing has prompted speculation about the increasingly competitive battle for primetime television audiences.
The move comes just weeks after e.tv launched its new drama series, “The Four of Us”, in the coveted 8 pm timeslot.
Some television observers believe moving “Uzalo”, one of South Africa’s most-watched programmes, into that slot could help SABC 1 strengthen its position against growing competition while allowing “Generations: The Legacy” to continue to close out the channel’s primetime schedule.
The strategy also mirrors an earlier scheduling decision that saw “Skeem Saam” move to 7:30 pm, where it has continued to attract a strong evening audience.
The schedule change also comes at an emotional time for longtime “Generations” fans, following the death of veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi.
His portrayal of the ruthless Kenneth Mashaba made him one of the most memorable villains from the original “Generations” and cemented his place in South African television history.
Although viewers will soon need to tune in 30 minutes later, “Generations: The Legacy” remains one of South Africa’s most enduring television brands.
