TRAGEDY struck a family in Zimunya, on the outskirts of Mutare, when a seven-year-old girl drowned in a deep well after being sent by her mother to fetch some water.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the tragic incident.
He said Tadiwanashe Kufakunesu’s lifeless body was found by her mother Judemerry Makondo floating in the well.
“On July 24, 2026, at around 2.50pm and at Kufakunesu homestead, Magodhlo Village, Chief Zimunya, Mutare, Tadiwa Kufakunesu was sent to fetch water by her mother Judemerry Makondo at a deep well which is about 30 meters from their homestead.
“Tadiwanashe carried a blue five litre bucket and went to fetch water alone at the well.
“She slipped and drowned in the well.
“Tadiwanashe’s mother became suspicious when her daughter took a long time to return home.
“She followed to check on her.
“Upon reaching the deep well, she saw Tadiwanashe’s pink slippers and a blue five-litre bucket floating on the edge of the well.”
He added:
“Makondo then entered into the deep well and managed to retrieve the body of her daughter.
“She tried to render first aid but there were no signs of life. She called out her husband, Oncemore Kufakunesu (31), who had remained at their homestead.
“The father of the now deceased ferried the body to their homestead.
“A report was made at ZRP Mutare Rural by the now deceased’s father and police attended the scene.
“The body of the now deceased was inspected and no visible injuries were observed.”
