GOVERNMENT has approved the Inter-Governmental Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation regarding the development of Inga 3 Transmission Lines Project, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere has said.

Addressing the media in a post-Cabinet briefing yesterday, Minister Muswere said the development will see the implementation of the project and promotion of the reinforcement of existing interconnectors between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Africa and partner countries to facilitate trading of electricity generated from the Inga 3 Hydropower Project.

The project has the capacity to generate over 40 000MW of hydropower from the Congo River and necessitates the need to establish a transmission scheme traversing through Zambia, Zimbabwe and/ or Botswana (transit countries) to deliver power to South Africa, while the transit countries will have the opportunity to draw power from the scheme.
