THERE was drama in Gwanda when three suspected copper crooks were busted right in the middle of their alleged late night mission to strip the Municipality of Gwanda workshop bare.
Police confirmed the arrest of Silabo Sibanda (37), Thubelihle Ngwenya (32) and Ekem Nkomo (52) after they were reportedly found grinding away at copper cables inside the council workshop.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said officers acted swiftly after receiving information about the illegal break-in.
“On 04 December 2025 police in Gwanda arrested the suspects for unlawful entry into premises and theft,” said Comm Nyathi.
He revealed that the trio was caught in the act.
“The suspects were apprehended while in the process of cutting the cables with a grinder,” he said.
A three metre long copper cable was recovered at the scene as evidence of the foiled heist.
Police applauded members of the public for supplying information that led to the arrests and urged communities to remain vigilant.
“We warn criminals that the police will continue to act on all reports and information,” said Comm Nyathi.
The trio is expected to appear in court soon as the fight against copper cable theft intensifies.
