A 56-year-old Gweru-based nurse reportedly shot himself in the head with a 303 rifle amid allegations that he had sexually abused a close relative.
Police have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Midlands Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the development saying Farai Zindonda (pictured) was found dead at his house in Woodlands Suburb in Gweru last week.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms investigating a case of sudden death, suspected suicide by shooting. A 56-year-old man was found dead, his body lying in a pool of blood at a house in Woodlands residential suburbs, Gweru on December 29,” he said.
Insp Mahoko said the now deceased is suspected to have shot himself, as a 303 rifle loaded with nine rounds was in his hands, pointing to his head, which had a gunshot wound.
“Investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances leading to the death. The now deceased was established as Farai Zindonda (56),” he said.
Insp Mahoko called upon members of the public not to take their lives as a solution.
“They should learn to share with third parties or respected people who can help with counselling,” he said.
Meanwhile, a close relative claimed that the late nurse, who was recently buried in his rural home in Chirumanzu, had allegedly sexually abused his 10-year-old close relative.
“Some relatives got wind of that and when they threatened reporting him to the police, he took his life,” said the source on condition of anonymity.
