HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY BLACK COFFEE

JOHANNESBURG. – Grammy-winning South African DJ Black Coffee celebrated his birthday yesterday and fans and his loved ones shared well-wishes on social media.

Multi-award-winning music producer and pioneer Oskido, in an Instagram post, welcomed Black Coffee, real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo, to the fifth floor.

“Happy 50th, @realblackcoffee. From humble beginnings to Grammy wins, to global stages, and all the unforgettable moments in between today we celebrate your iconic journey.

“Welcome to the fifth floor. Keep inspiring the world, Nathi, my Bhuda.”

Black Coffee is one of South Africa’s greatest talents and here is a look at moments that have made him a cultural icon, not only at home but in the world.

Releasing His Breakthrough Album

Pieces of Me (2015)

His album “Pieces of Me” became a landmark in South African house music.

Featuring artists like Bucie, the project blended soulful house with African sounds and became one of the most celebrated house albums from South Africa, helping him reach international audiences.

Winning the “Breakthrough DJ of the Year” at the DJ Awards (2015)

Black Coffee became the first South African DJ to win “Breakthrough DJ of the Year” at the prestigious DJ Awards in Ibiza.

Winning Best International Act: Africa at the BET Awards (2016)

His win at the BET Awards for Best International Act: Africa placed him among the continent’s biggest music stars and showed that a DJ could represent Africa globally alongside singers and rappers.

Historic Ibiza Residency (2017)

Black Coffee became the first South African DJ to secure a residency in Ibiza, the global capital of dance music.

His residency at the iconic Hi Ibiza helped introduce Afro-house to a wider European club audience and positioned him among the world’s top DJs.

Winning a Grammy Award (2022)

One of the biggest milestones in his career came when Black Coffee won Best Dance/Electronic Album at the Grammy Awards for his album Subconsciously.

This made him one of the few African electronic producers to win a Grammy and elevated his global status even further.

Headlining Madison Square Garden (2023)

In October 2023, Black Coffee made history by headlining and selling out Madison Square Garden in New York.
