The City of Harare is undertaking some water infrastructure upgrading projects in Avondale and surrounding areas aimed at improving water supply, reducing leakages and strengthening the reliability of the distribution network.
In his service delivery report at a Ward 17 feedback meeting held at MacDonald Swimming Pool on Saturday, Ward 17 Councillor Happymore Gotora said a 225mm AC water pipe is being replaced at Churchill Road and College Road to Mt Pleasant Drive and College Road due to continuous leakages along the existing pipeline.
“Approximately 300 metres have been laid to date. The estimated remaining distance to be covered is 850m,” he said.
“The project is expected to improve water supply and reduce frequent pipe bursts and leakages affecting surrounding areas.
“Areas that may be affected by the works include Alexandra Park from Borrowdale Road, Gunhill, Groombridge and parts of Mt Pleasant.”
Cllr Gotora said upgrading of Lymington Road of 250m of water pipeline has been completed.
He said a new valve has been installed along West and Suffolk Roads to improve control and management of water distribution within the network.
Cllr Gotora said 130m of water pipeline has been upgraded along Aberdeen Road, and Argyle Road has been zoned to facilitate improved water supply and pressure management.
He said water infrastructure upgrading on Cork Road has been completed and water pipeline upgrading on East Road has also been completed.
“These interventions form part of the council’s ongoing efforts to replace ageing infrastructure, reduce leakages and pipe bursts, improve water pressure and ensure a more reliable water supply to residents in Avondale, Alexandra Park, Gunhill, Groombridge and surrounding areas,” said Cllr Gotora.
He said there are several important water infrastructure projects and repairs being undertaken from Mabelreign Police Station to Albury Road, a 150mm line, Albury to Ellis Robin’s Greenway (250mm line), Ellis Robin’s Greenway to through WestMinster Road to Takely Road (150mm and 250mm lines), Shashi flats (90mm line), Quinton road to Riverhead (150mm line) and Warbury to Albury roads (150mm line).
Cllr Gotora said the council continues to work on improving pumping efficiency, reducing water losses and replacing ageing infrastructure.
“Leak detection teams remain active while burst pipes and other faults are attended to as resources become available,” he said.
Cllr Gotora urged residents to use water responsibly and report burst pipes and illegal connections promptly to allow the council to respond quickly and prevent unnecessary loss of water.
