THE City of Harare has upgraded traffic signals at the Samora Machel Avenue and Glenara Avenue intersection following concerns raised by residents and ratepayers.

Speaking at a Highlands stakeholders’ feedback meeting held at the Highlands District Office on Tuesday, City of Harare superintendent for traffic signals Mr Noel Mwendamberi said council had installed a right-turn arrow and adjusted the timing at the intersection.

“I think it is operating much better than it was before,” he said.

Mr Mwendamberi said the council was also working on traffic signals along Glenara Avenue and Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Road.

“We have managed to put a five-aspect signal that incorporates a right-turn arrow where traffic has tended to build up for motorists intending to turn right,” he said.

“So we are working on trying to identify cables. When those traffic lights were constructed, some of them were done way back, so you find the wiring and anticipated traffic movements by then were sometimes not incorporated.

“So we are trying to find out how we can get the extra cables to ensure that the five-aspect signal can be wired.”

On road maintenance, roads section representative Mr Mutasa said council had completed work on six roads, initially focusing on high-density areas in Region 5 that had been badly damaged.

These included Mabvuku, Tafara and Hatcliffe.

“We have now moved to low densities, starting with Greendale sometime last week. We patched Rhodesville Avenue, which we patched yesterday (Tuesday),” he said.

“We are also going to do a section from Samora Machel Avenue to Clyde shops to decongest traffic from Glenara Avenue.

“That section from Samora Machel Avenue to Mutare Road is heavily congested. So we are trying to open a route from Samora Machel to Clyde so that we share the traffic and do away with the traffic congesting that section.”

He said the roads section would work on Court Road and Coronation Avenue before moving to Highlands and other roads identified by residents.

Meanwhile, Harare Municipal Police Inspector Enos Mutasa said the municipal police had stepped up enforcement operations in several areas, including Borrowdale, Gaydon Road and Carrick Creagh, Gaydon Road and Stonechat, Drew Road and Emmerson Mnangagwa Road, Brooke Shops, Mandara Shops, Harare Drive and Borrowdale Road, Coronation Avenue from Mutare Road, Clyde Shops and Newlands.

“Our duties include keeping council properties safe. For the time being, we are in a good state because there are no break-ins or stolen things at our properties,” he said.
