Thousands gathered at Zinatsa Secondary School in ward 20, Chikomba District for the installation of Mr Chitanda Nyevero as substantive Headman Mukoroverwa.
The installation was held under Chief Neshangwe’s area of jurisdiction and it was held concurrently with the Chikomba district culture month celebrations, where the Nhanga/Gota lessons for adolescent boys and girsl took centre stage.
In his speech which was read on his behalf by Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East Mr Tavabarira Kutamahufa, the Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Advocate Itayi Ndudzo highlighted the critical role played by traditional leaders in communities.
“Fellow citizens, today marks a pivotal moment for the Mukoroverwa clan and the entire Chikomba community,” he said.
“The installation of a substantive headman is a vital step towards strengthening local governance. It is reaffirmation of our commitment to the principles of leadership that are deeply roooted in our customs and traditions.
“A headman plays an essential role in our society, serving as a bridge between the people and the higher echelons of leadership.
“The duties of a Headman are, to assist the Chief to perform his duties, to ensure that law and order prevails in his area, to recommend to the Chief, suitable people for appointment as village heads and, where necessary, recommend their dismissal, to report criminal activities, acts of misconduct and violation of customs and traditions to the Chief and to preside over a ward assembly when elected and oversee the disposal of settlement rights and admission of new settlers in the areaw under him and to keep the Chief and council informed of any changes.”
He added that a headman is also mandated with mediating in local disputes and to discharge any functions conferred upon him in terms of the Customary Law and Local Courts Act Chapter 7:5
Advocate Ndudzo also said a headman should ensure enforcement of all environmental conservation and planning laws, including local field boundaries, on behalf of the chief, council and the state.
He challenged Headman Mukoroverwa to hold the office with honor and integrity.
“As we welcome Headman Mukoroverwa into this esteemed office, we must remember that with this honour comes the expectation of integrity, accountability and dedication,” he said.
“I encourage you Headman Mukoroverwa, to approach this role with a steadfast commitment to the welfare of your people.
“Let your actions be guided by the desire to uplift and empower every resident of your area of jurisdiction.
“Your leadership should inspire hope, foster unity and cultivate a sense of belonging among all who reside in this land.”
Advocate Ndudzo also implored traditional leaders to desist from illegal selling of land.
