Highlanders FC mourn six supporters killed in road accident

HIGHLANDERS Football Club is mourning six supporters who died in a road accident on Sunday after travelling to Barbourfields Stadium to watch the club’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match against Herentals FC.

The supporters were returning to Filabusi when the accident occurred about 15km from the town.

In a statement, Highlanders said the club was deeply saddened by the loss of its supporters, describing them as part of its “100-year family”.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the President, Board of Directors, Executive Committee, Secretariat, Technical Team, players, members and supporters of Highlanders Football Club announce the tragic passing of six of our beloved supporters in a road accident on Sunday, 23 August 2026,” said the club.

“The supporters were travelling back to Filabusi after watching our Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match against Herentals FC at Barbourfields Stadium when the accident occurred approximately 15kms from Filabusi.”

Highlanders extended its condolences to the bereaved families, relatives and friends, saying the deceased had travelled to the match “with love, loyalty and pride for the Club”.

“They were part of our 100-year family, and their absence will be deeply felt on the terraces of Barbourfields Stadium,” said the club.

The club also said five other supporters were injured in the accident, with four admitted to Filabusi Hospital and one in critical condition at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).

“We also wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured and are currently receiving treatment. Four have been admitted to Filabusi Hospital, while one is in critical condition at UBH in Bulawayo,” said Highlanders.

The club thanked the Zimbabwe Republic Police, emergency services, Filabusi Hospital, UBH and other stakeholders who responded to the accident and assisted the affected families.

“Highlanders Football Club is your family. We are with you,” said the club.

The tragedy comes as Highlanders supporters were celebrating their team’s 2-0 victory over Herentals at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.
