FRESH from securing a hard-fought qualification, Zimbabwe Under-19 batter Nathaniel Hlabangana has expressed his squad’s eagerness to reach the knock-out phase of the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup when they play India in Bulawayo today.
This edition, co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia, is the 16th edition of the ICC Under-19 World Cup.
Hlabangana believes there is always every reason to celebrate their feat despite failure to win a single game in the group stages, progressing rather on net run rate at the expense of Scotland.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” he stated.
“We’re very excited, and we just can’t wait to get started in this next stage.”
Hlabangana attributed their successful campaign to a disciplined and mature approach at the crease.
Outlining the batting mindset that propelled them, Hlabangana said: “It was about being patient and building an innings, giving yourself time, respecting the good balls, and making sure you put the bad balls away.”
Their path to qualification was not without its anxious moments. After posting what Hlabangana admitted was a sub-par first-innings total, the team required a precise performance in the field.
“During the break, the coaches told us what we needed to do to qualify,” he revealed.
“We went out there, backed our skills, and trusted one another. That’s how we ended up qualifying.”
Looking ahead to the high-pressure knock-out rounds, where their next challenge awaits at a new venue, Hlabangana remained focused on the process.
When questioned about his team’s potential to lift the trophy, he offered a measured response.
“That’s a tough question at the moment. We are just going to keep pushing and see how far we end up going.
“The conditions will be different, so we have to adapt as quickly as we can,” he said. He also drew confidence from the team’s supporters, adding, “I am sure the support will be the same as we have been getting throughout the tournament so far.”
