IN a grisly family tragedy that police say looks “too bizarre to comprehend,” a mother was found fast asleep next to the lifeless body of her stabbed son.
Netsai Chikuni (39), said national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, was arrested in connection with the murder of her son on 20 November at a house in Mushamukadzi, Hobhouse suburb. The details are very disturbing.
Comm Nyathi said: “The suspect allegedly assaulted her son to death for reasons yet to be established.” The boy, whose age police were still verifying at the time of writing, was found with horrific injuries.
“The victim was found dead with multiple stab wounds on the head and neck.”
Two blood stained kitchen knives lay next to the body like silent witnesses to the carnage. Investigators say the scene looked like something out of a horror film, with splatters and signs of a struggle inside the small home.
But what stunned officers the most was how they found the suspect.
Police revealed: “The suspect was arrested while asleep next to the victim with self inflicted injuries on the hands and legs.” It is suspected she may have tried to harm herself after the attack before drifting into unconsciousness.
Witnesses said the scene looked “like a ritual gone wrong,” while others suggested the suspect could have suffered a mental breakdown.
Police, however, appealed for calm as investigations continue. “We are still establishing the motive,” said Comm Nyathi, urging the public to avoid speculation and allow detectives to piece together what drove the alleged attack.
The body was taken to Mutare Provincial Hospital for post mortem while the suspect remains under police guard.
