A HOMELESS Kadoma man’s joyride ended in jail after he stole a Toyota Spacio from a locked garage and was caught BY residents while driving the stolen car the next day.
The drama started on 8 September 2025 when a 44-year-old man took his faulty white Toyota Spacio to MT Garage in Kadoma for repairs. He left the keys with the mechanic, unaware that a 32-year-old drifter, Simbarashe Katsande, was lurking nearby and watching every move.
When the car owner returned later that evening, he was told the vehicle needed a bearing and decided to leave it overnight. That is when Katsande sneaked into the garage, found where the keys were kept, and vanished into the night with the car worth US$4 500.
The following morning, the owner was stunned to find his car missing and quickly reported the theft to ZRP Kadoma.
The very next day, the victim spotted his car cruising towards Kadoma CBD with Katsande behind the wheel.
Members of the public teamed up to block the vehicle, dragged him out, and handed him over to police.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that Katsande was convicted of theft by the Kadoma Magistrates’ Court and sentenced to five years in jail, with one year suspended on condition of good behaviour.
“He will serve four years in prison,” said the NPAZ in a statement.
