UNITED Kingdom-based songstress Busi Mhlanga, popularly known as The Queen of AbeNguni, has been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Music and Production Management by the American Management University, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to music and cultural education.

The accolade acknowledges Mhlanga’s decades-long commitment to using music as a tool for empowerment, cultural preservation and community upliftment.

Speaking after receiving the honour, Mhlanga said the university had reached out after conducting extensive research into her artistic journey, which dates back to the early 1990s. “They researched my work from back then to the present day and certified my impact on public services through a panel of esteemed academics. Throughout my career, I have performed across the UK and beyond — from festivals to schools and social gatherings — recording music that reflects my personal experiences while promoting cultural awareness and education,” she told this publication.

She added that her involvement in documentaries and projects promoting cultural diversity through music and dance also contributed to the recognition.

“They therefore recognised and approved me for the honorary doctorate in Music and Production Management. I am deeply grateful that my years of music and performing arts efforts have been acknowledged, and I am honoured to now hold the title of Doctor Sibusiso Mhlanga,” she said.

Mhlanga said she hopes the recognition will serve as motivation for others pursuing careers in the arts.
“I want to inspire people in the creative industry and the younger generation to never give up. Believe in yourself — your efforts matter and are seen. This achievement marks a new chapter in my journey, and I trust God Almighty that I will continue to reach greater heights. Aluta Continua!” she said.

Drawing inspiration from the St John’s Apostolic Faith Mission, where she led the choir from a young age, Dr Mhlanga has risen to become one of the most celebrated traditional singers dedicated to preserving African culture, even in Western societies where Western culture dominates.

Dr Mhlanga often states, “I am because of my circles”, as she believes her music is inspired by all the circles she belongs to. Her musical journey began as a young girl in Bulawayo, where she sang in school choirs and led the John’s Apostolic Faith Mission choir. This marked the beginning of her musical journey, which has led her to become one of the most celebrated African singers and performers.

Deeply rooted in her unique musical style and spiritual heritage, she draws inspiration from her grandfather, a traditional healer. Growing up in Gwelutshena, Nkayi, she was immersed in song and dance during family ceremonies and celebrations, often mimicking the performances of her elders.

Her professional music journey began in 1992 as the lead vocalist for Bulawayo’s pioneering all-female troupe, Umhlathuzi, which operated under the mentorship of the legendary Black Umfolosi. Three years later, in 1995, she joined Albert Nyathi and Imbongi Arts Productions as lead vocalist, a role she held until 2000 before venturing into a solo career that took her to Denmark and eventually the United Kingdom.

She is a solo artiste and, at times, with support from her band, has performed at major international festivals in the United Kingdom, where she is based, and has been featured on BBC programmes. Her career highlights include performing in honour of the late South African icon Nelson Mandela in London.
