Former Orlando Pirates talisman Relebohile Mofokeng is now a homeowner after winning a high-stakes bet against the club’s chairman, Irvin Khoza.
Pirates ended their long league trophy drought last season by winning the Betway Premiership. Mofokeng was an integral figure in that success, hitting double digits for the team with 10 goals and eight assists.
Mofokeng was highly motivated to help Pirates return to the pinnacle of South African football, making his intentions clear during a personal bet with the club boss.
“They made a bet: if they didn’t win the league, he (Mofokeng) would give the Chairman R200 000. But if they won the league, the Chairman would buy him any house of his choice,” Mofokeng’s father, Sechaba, revealed in an interview on Season 2 of Giants.
Sechaba went on to confirm that Khoza stayed true to his word and bought Mofokeng the house. The close bond between the duo highlighted how they formed a strong father-and-son relationship during Mofokeng’s time at the club.
Mofokeng has since grown into his own man – not only helping Pirates secure the league title, but also being crowned the PSL Player of the Season at just 21 years old.
The attacker has since left the Sea Robbers’ ship for greener pastures, joining Belgian outfit Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on a lucrative contract. Mofokeng has adapted quickly to life in Belgium,
registering five goals and four assists so far.
Mofokeng’s fine form has not gone unnoticed. He has become a key figure for Bafana Bafana, helping the national team off to a flying start in the 2027 Afcon qualifiers with victories over Guinea
and Eritrea.
He will need to be at his best again next month when Bafana face Kenya in back-to-back qualifiers, starting at Orlando Stadium on November 13. Delivering another strong performance at his
former home ground will not only propel Bafana forward, but also rekindle fond memories of where he truly became family. – iol.
