THE darkest day in the history of mining in Zimbabwe, when 427 miners died in a disaster in Hwange on June 6, 1972, will be remembered this year through a marathon.

The inaugural Kamandama Memorial Marathon, set for November 30, will pay tribute to the 427 miners who died in the Kamandama disaster.

The event is being organised by Hwange Athletics Club and sponsored by Hwange Colliery Company.

The theme, “Running to Remember”, captures the marathon’s purpose as it brings together athletes, communities and families still tied to the loss suffered on that day.

“The Kamandama mining tragedy remains one of the deadliest mine disasters in Africa and amongst the worst ever recorded globally.

“It stands as a powerful tribute to the departed miners, many of whom came from several Southern African nations.

“Beyond recognising the disaster, the marathon serves as a rallying call for continued vigilance in workplace safety and ongoing pursuit of justice for mining communities,” reads a statement from the organisers.

The statement added:

“The grief of 427 families, most from across Southern Africa, echoes to this day. Many endured profound social and economic hardship. “Widows and their loved ones faced instability and poverty. The Kamandama Memorial Marathon stands as a living memorial to their loss and resilience.”

The race will run through Hwange town and finish inside the Hwange Colliery Stadium, a symbolic ending for a day built on reflection and unity.

Both the half marathon and full marathon will take runners to within 500m of the Kamandama Memorial site.Professional and amateur athletes from various backgrounds are expected to take part.

After the race, the commemoration will shift into celebration, with an after party at the stadium.

Alick Macheso and South African star Nkosazana Daughter will headline the concert.

They will be joined by Jah Signal, Jah Master, Mxolisi, Bio D.T Mudimba.
