THE Epworth woman, whose video bashing her son and burning his hand on a gas stove, has pleaded GUILTY to the charge of ill-treating the child.

Mercy Kawesa appeared before Epworth magistrate, Esther Mutezo, and was remanded in custody to Monday for the full plea recording.

Kawesa’s video went viral last weekend and she was arrested after the police launched a manhunt against her in the wake of the video.Prosecutor Vincent Chidembo told the court that on Thursday last week, at Overspill Shops in Epworth, the boy entered their neighbour’s tuckshop while the owner wasn’t there. This angered his mother.

She took a cooking stick and started assaulting her son several times on his hand. She went on to burn his left hand on a gas stove flame several times.

The child sustained blisters on his left palm as a result of the vicious assault.

The video of the mother bashing her son went viral on social media after being secretly recorded.

The State awaits reports from the probation officer and a medical assessment.
