From being a minnow only two years ago, and struggling to market his debut album, Jah Prayzah’s profile has risen dramatically, and his name is being pitted against Zimbabwe’s best musicians to date.
His big break came when he scooped the top three for his hits “Gochi Gochi”, “Maria” and “Chirangano” during last year’s Coca-Cola Radio Zimbabwe Top 50 chart show.
Even though he won big in the chart show it wasn’t enough to convince his contemporaries as well as critics that he was a talented artiste and one to watch out for. However, he changed the perception of many with the release of “Tsviriyo” which spawned club bangers like “Sisiriya” featuring superstar Oliver Mtukudzi and “Ngoda” as well as the title track which are receiving heavy rotation on almost every radio station in the land.
Born Mukudzei Mukombe, Jah Prayzah has been unstoppable appearing on top magazine covers and performing at high-profile gigs as the main act.
Clad in army fatigues, the lanky singer has also introduced what he calls “soldier dance” where he partners one of his popular dancers called “Generator”, real name Jane Chakanetsa.
The duo surely knows how to keep their fans on their feet.
Perhaps this is why he continues to draw huge crowds to his live shows every weekend. There is more in the offing as Jah Prayzah is not a one-hit wonder. He has a string of hits including “Sorry Mama”, “Ngwarira Kuparara” and “Sungano”. Chances are that tonight’s gig will leave lasting memories.
His collaboration with Suluman Chimbetu has worked magic and the two buddies are at the top of their game.
Expectations are high when Jah Prayzah and the Dembos take to the stage at a venue synonymous with jazz. But that shouldn’t be a bother since the venue has hosted artistes from other genres including marabi and dub-poetry.
The Dembo brothers, who are on a comeback trail, will start the show and as is always the case, they will churn out renditions of their late father’s classics including hits such as “Chitekete”, “Madhiri”, “Babamunini”, “Shiri Yakangwara”, “Handingazvigone”, “Chengeto” and “Musha Rudzii” among others.
Fans should look forward to a night of musical bliss when the youthful musicians taken them down memory lane.
Though the brothers have released one album to date, they have learned a lot performing alongside other seasoned musicians in the form of Alick Macheso, Oliver Mtukudzi and Somandla Ndebele.
However, this does not mean that the brothers are not talented. No, they just need time to discover themselves since they have plenty of room to improve.
Besides being a carbon copy of his father, Morgan is also growing musically and physically such that whenever he takes to the stage fans are reminded of the great Leonard Dembo. Their act has vastly improved.
Partson “Chipaz” Chimbodza of Chipaz Promotions, who are organising the gig, emphasised the gig was meant to show great artistry of the two groups.
“I have worked with Jah Prayzah during his formative years and he is one musician who really works hard to entertain his fans regardless of their background or social status.
He is so passionate about his music and I think people should view him as an artiste.
“These are two talented groups with a bright future ahead and it would be good to see fans coming in their numbers,” Chipaz said.
