EARLY morning travellers near Mzilikazi Barracks, formerly known as Brady Barracks, got more than they bargained for after a jealous Bulawayo man allegedly turned a lovers’ quarrel into a full-blown public performance complete with flying slaps, screaming accusations and enough drama to wake the whole neighbourhood.

Colman Moyo (46) of Montgomery was arrested after assaulting his girlfriend, Sanelisiwe Bhebhe, before loudly branding her a prostitute in front of stunned strangers.

For his behaviour, Bulawayo Magistrate Barbara Phiri fined him US$100, which must be paid before May 22 or he will spend three months in jail. He also received an additional two-month prison sentence fully suspended for five years on condition he keeps his hands and temper under control.

The court heard the dramatic showdown erupted around 4AM near the Barracks while the couple was waiting for transport home.

According to court proceedings, Moyo suddenly boiled over and rained slaps on Bhebhe “like a man trying to dust a carpet”.

Witnesses watched in shock as the furious boyfriend accused the woman of cheating with drivers passing by.

“All those drivers are your boyfriends!” he shouted during the public meltdown.

Commuters nearby were left awkwardly pretending not to listen while secretly hearing every juicy detail of the lovers’ chaos.

Bhebhe told the court this was not the first storm in their relationship. She said Moyo threatens violence whenever arguments break out and the abuse had become a toxic routine.

Although no medical report was produced because she was not examined by a doctor, the court still found the physical and verbal abuse serious enough to punish the 46-year-old.

The matter was later reported to Zimbabwe Republic Police, who reportedly wasted no time hauling the jealous lover to the station.
