A man aged 46 from Bulawayo has been sentenced to six years in prison for using broken bottle pieces, an iron bar and stones to assault his girlfriend after she ended their relationship following a misunderstanding.
Samson Chisale of Pumula South suburb was convicted by Western Commonage regional magistrate Mr Pasipanodya Maturure for attempted murder.
He was initially sentenced to six years in prison of which two years were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence.
The remaining four years are effective.
In passing the sentence, Mr Maturure said attempted murder is a serious offence as it threatens human life and deserves a custodial sentence.
Prosecutor, Ms Christina Manyika told the court that the accused person is the complainant’s boyfriend.
She said that on May 4, 2026 at around 6.15 PM, Evidence Moyo (38) was on her way to the bus stop with her son.
The court heard that along the way, near a house in Pumula South, Moyo met the accused person and they had a misunderstanding over their relationship.
Following the misunderstanding, the complainant ended their relationship, and this did not go down well with the accused person, who then used broken bottle pieces, an iron bar and stones to assault his girlfriend several times all over the body, said Ms Manyika.
The complainant sustained a swollen mouth, a cut on the forehead and the back of the head, and was referred to hospital for medical examination.
A police report was made, leading to the arrest of the accused person, said Ms Manyika.
