RESIDENTS of Kuwadzana Extension have called for authorities to intervene after two pedestrians were struck, and killed, on the same spot along the Harare-Bulawayo highway, within three days.
Two other residents were injured.
Sineti Dambaza, 79, a Salvation Army church section leader, died at the scene on Friday after being hit by a Mercedes-Benz, while crossing the highway.
Her death came just two days after another pedestrian, whose identity was not immediately known, died at the same spot. Two others were injured when they were hit by an Isuzu D-Max.
One of the injured was a Kuwadzana 5 Primary School pupil, who sustained leg fractures, and head injuries.
Community member, Trymore Makwara, said:
“We are appealing for traffic lights or speed humps because the Kuwadzana Extension turn-off from Bulawayo Road has become a black spot,” Makwara said.
“A dark cloud has hovered over the Kuwadzana Extension community following the deaths of two people and the injuries to two other pedestrians.
“Motorists have been speeding, putting pedestrians at risk between the Dzivarasekwa and Kuwadzana Extension turn-offs.
“This is the same area that claimed the lives of our musician Sam (Mtukudzi) and his sound engineer some time ago.
“Since then, we have been appealing for help.
“Gogo Dambaza was known for changing people’s lives through preaching the good news while the other deceased was a student and a promising leader,” he said.
On Saturday, residents gathered to pay their last respects to Dambaza.
She was taken to Guruve where she was laid to rest on Sunday.
