The launch of the newly certified privately owned ferry set to restore water transport services on Lake Kariba following the August 11 tragedy that claimed 97 lives is now underway in the resort town.
The vessel, named Silverstone Ferries, has a carrying capacity of at least 60 passengers and is being commissioned by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Engineer Joy Makumbe.
The ferry is also equipped with two tender boats to support emergency response operations.
Government is meanwhile in the process of procuring two additional boats to service communities along the route.
The vessel was offered by a private operator following Government’s call for greater private sector participation in restoring water transport services on Lake Kariba.
It is expected to commence operations soon.
