Fresh from a successful edition of the Phenomenal Lighting Masterclass and Festival in Domboshava, UK-based Bulawayo lighting designer Mildred “Lighting Bae” Moyo is taking her knowledge-sharing mission to the majestic city of Victoria Falls.

In partnership with one of her star protégés, Collin “Scotchy_Black” Sambo, the duo will host a two-day Lighting Masterclass at the Victoria Falls Theatre from 7 to 8 September under the theme: “Introduction to Stage Lighting: From Rigging to Design”.

Speaking about the initiative, Sambo said the goal is to equip local theatre technicians and performers with essential lighting skills that can open new career opportunities.
“I graduated from one of Mildred Moyo’s classes, so I decided to organise this masterclass mainly for Victoria Falls theatre technicians and actors. This will help them understand lighting better and even consider it as a career path,” said Sambo.

For Moyo, this masterclass is more than just a training session; it represents the growth of a movement she started to share knowledge and empower others.
“I’m so excited to support one of the Phenomenal Lighting Masterclass alumni. Scotchy was part of the first ‘Lights Out’ tour in Bulawayo four years ago, and I’ve seen him grow tremendously as a technician with Simunye. Seeing him give back and create opportunities for others is close to my heart,” she said.

The masterclass will cover rigging, console programming, light focusing, experimentation, and clotting, giving attendees hands-on experience with industry-standard practices.

Who is Scotchy_Black? Collin “Scotchy_Black” Sambo is a versatile creative whose career spans over six years. He has excelled as an actor, producer, filmmaker, artist manager, and lighting technician.

His impressive portfolio includes working as director of Photography (DOP) on award-winning productions such as the Bulawayo Arts Awards-winning drama series “Amanxeba” and the “Maliwe” TV series.

In addition, he has contributed as a freelance journalist and photographer for Ekasi Magazine and volunteered as a lighting technician at Bulawayo Theatre. Currently, he serves as Head Technician, Lighting Technician, Props and Puppets Manager at Victoria Falls Theatre.

Recently, Sambo showcased his craft at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa, and continues to push boundaries while inspiring a new generation of creatives.
